The European Poker Tour (EPT) began in 2004 as part of the worldwide explosion in Texas Hold 'em popularity with many European casino winners making a fortune. It is a series of televised poker tournaments similar to those in the online casino World Poker Tour (WPT). In seasons 1-3, the most significant difference between the competing poker tours was the buy-in and its effect on the prize pool, with the EPT featuring buy-ins about half the size of the WPT.
This changed in season 4 when the buy-in for most EPT events was increased to €8,000. (Due to increased popularity and lack of space in participating casinos).[1] At 2007 exchange rates, this is approximately equal to the US$10,000 which is the buy-in for most WPT events. Furthermore, the final table is made up of 8 players, as opposed to the 6 player final tables popularized by the WPT
EPT Poker Stars
The EPT is sponsored by Poker Stars and taped by Sunset + Vine for television broadcast across Europe. The tour was created by John Duthie, winner of the inaugural Poker Million tournament. Duthie commentates for the show, alongside Colin Murray. The show was first hosted by Caroline Flack, and then joined by Natalie Pinkham. Season 4 of the show is hosted by Kara Scott.

Poker Stars qualifier Glen Chorny wins the Grand Final of the European Poker Tour Season 4. In what proved to be the biggest tournament Europe has ever seen, 22-year-old Canadian Chorny beat 841 players to walk away with €2,020,000 ($3,203,671) in cash. Over 12 hours of intense final table action, Chorny built up a healthy stack, especially after eliminating 4th place finisher Isaac Baron.
Going into heads-up with a 10-1 chip lead, the final hand saw Chorny’s A-5 hold up against the K-Q of runner-up Denes Kalo. The final table also featured Team Poker Stars Pro member Luca Pagano, who now holds the record for most EPT cashes. He was eliminated in 6th, taking away €337,000 ($533,819).
The event attracted a field of world class poker players, including Team Poker Stars Pro members Daniel Negreanu, Joe Hachem, Barry Greenstein, Raymond Rahme, Gavin Griffin, Chad Brown, Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, Vanessa Rousso and Dario Minieri. Rahme made the top 30, while Hachem came close to equaling Gavin Griffin’s record of winning an EPT, WPT and World Series title. He was eventually eliminated in 11th, taking away €101,000 ($161,191).
